Ministries at LCCAdult EducationThe Adult Education Ministry is designed to encourage those who wish to be life-long learners. Broadening the knowledge base of members and visitors from the community alike, sessions may cover a host of religious topics from Christian, Jewish, Muslim and other world faiths to secular topics such as medical, financial, and cultural issues. Exploration, learning and open discussion are the keys to understanding and acceptance. ADULT EDUCATION REPORT FOR 2009We began the year with a bang ---- a three part series “Three Faiths, One God”. Several people from the community, beyond our congregation, attended these sessions. This set the focus for the year as we took the time to explore several of the world’s major religions. We purchased a series of DVD’s that included very detailed and interesting information on Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Catholicism, Judaism and Protestantism. The Buddhism session included a Buddhist friend of Kathy’s, on hand to explain concepts introduced in the DVD and answer questions. Many new things were learned by all who attended. Doug Townsey, Professor of Finance at DePaul University, returned to us and spoke about the current state of the economy. His charts and graphs, as always, assisted us in understanding some very complex topics. Sunday evening presentations included: The movie “Amazing Grace”, our own Rob Miller speaking to the group about his mission adventure to Nicaragua and a wellness/health presentation from Dr. Katy and Dr. Quentin Sleigh. The remainder of our Sunday sessions was devoted to discussions of the following topics: Jesus’ Face in Art, Mary of Nazareth, John Calvin, The History of God, The Lord’s Prayer, and The Egyptian Exodus of the Israelites. As you can see, our topics remain extremely varied to appeal to a variety of people and to expand our horizons of knowledge on both religious and secular topics. Our attempt this year was to conduct relevant education at a minimal cost. We managed to obtain all of our speakers for free and used a variety of very low cost educational mediums to conduct the remaining sessions. We will continue this objective through 2010.
